Measure your carbon footprint

WHY

To lose weight, you first have to weigh yourself! With carbon, it’s a bit the same: calculating your carbon footprint lets you know where you’re starting from and identify the activities where you emit the most, so you can target these to change your practices!

WHAT

As a tourist, here are the main factors that influence the weight of your carbon footprint (click on the elements to know more):

Transport : the mode of transport, the distance traveled, the type of fuel or energy used, the energy efficiency of the means of transport and the occupancy rate of the vehicle etc.
Accommodation : the establishment’s energy consumption, waste management practices, water use, etc.
On-site activities: in general, outdoor activities may have a lower impact than certain activities requiring frequent car travel or even polluting activities such as go-karting or jet-ski.
Food and beverage: production, transportation and preparation of food consumed during travel.
Purchases and souvenirs: purchase of goods, particularly those manufactured abroad.
Waste management : management of waste generated during travel, including recycling and disposal.
Potential offsets : some tourists choose to offset their carbon footprint by participating in offset programs or supporting emissions reduction projects. We’ll talk more about it later!

It is important to note that the precise calculation of the carbon footprint may vary a bit depending on the methodology used by the organizations or the calculation tools. Some organizations and businesses in the tourism sector adopt eco-responsible practices and seek to minimize the environmental impact of their services. You can also help by making choices to support sustainability during your trip!
